On Oct. 23, the Girls Varsity Volleyball team finished out their season with a loss against Cor Jesu in the district tournament. This solidified their 14-15 record on the season. While this was a rough season for the Flyers they competed in games against tough teams like Oakville and Incarnate Word Academy and placed well in tournaments like the Lutheran St. Charles Varsity Tournament where they placed 3rd.
“The team bonded good and we had some good outcomes,” sophomore defensive specialist Lily Bertarelli said.
“I think we did pretty well, we competed with some high level teams and I think we worked well as a team,” sophomore middle blocker Marlee Steiner said.
This season also had plenty of records and milestones to celebrate. During the Flyers’ game against Rockwood Summit, senior libero, Grace Watts reached 500 career digs.
“It was really exciting to get 500, especially getting it on senior night. I was at first sad that due to my concussion I wouldn’t be able to reach 500, but I got to play and get it so that made me happier I think then I would have been because I thought I wouldn’t get it. And it was really fun getting to celebrate with the team after the play happened,” Watts said.
Senior setter, Lily Breed also had many accomplishments this season, on Oct. 3, against Kirkwood, she reached 1000 career assists. Later in the season on Senior Night, she set the school record for most assists in a single season with a total of 702 assists.
“I was definitely surprised when I broke the school record because, with it happening on my senior night, my teammates and coaches didn’t tell me I was breaking the record until it happened! So when I did get my last assist, everyone stood up and cheered and it was a big celebration. I felt really accomplished and appreciated!” Breed said.
Many girls also received All-District awards. Lily Bertarelli and Grace Watts were both honorable mentions, Gillian Pfeiffer and Lily Breed were both named to the 2nd team, and Marlee Steiner was named to the 1st team.
